12 Day Tour of the West Coast Islands and Highlands
Day 1 - Today you will board an overnight flight from (your local airport) to Glasgow.
Day 2 - Upon your arrival, you will be whisked away by your tour guide/driver to catch the ferry at Ardrossan over to the Isle of Arran. Once there, you can have a relaxing day touring the Isle of Arran Distillery, taking in Brodick Castle and Gardens, ending with a drive around the dramatic coastline before retiring. We will spend 2 nights on the island.
Day 3 - Today, you can choose to climb Goat Fell Mountain, walk any number of marked trails, see Lochranza Castle and view the amazing Neolithic and Bronze Age standing stones of the Machrie Moor. There is also a choice of seven golf courses waiting to challenge you.
Day 4 - We leave the island and head over to the West Coast Highlands region. It's only a short drive to the fishing village of Tarbert, just in time for lunch. Tarbert is a favourite photo spot. Then it's off along the west coast to Lochgilphead where we will spend the next 3 nights.
Day 5 - We begin our day by visiting the haunting Kilmartin Glen. We will take in the burial cairns of the Valley of the Ghosts, the standing stones of Temple Woods and a fine collection of stone carvings at Kilmartin Church. We will stop to view the hill-top fortress of Dunnadd, the ancient Kingdom of Dalriada, known as both the birthplace of Scotland and the coronation site of its first kings.
Day 6 - Today we will travel along Loch Fyne to the town of Inveraray. This is the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll. You can spend the day visiting the working Inveraray Castle, strolling around the quaint village with its black-and-white painted shops, or being an inmate in the famous Inveraray Jail! Weather permitting, we will end the day with a spectacular crimson sunset at the Crinan Canal.
Day 7 - Now we head down the Mull of Kintyre to spend some time watching the entertaining seal colony at Machrihanish, strolling the fine white sandy beaches at South End, walking in St. Columba's footsteps and looking across the 13-mile narrows to Ireland. Late afternoon, we will board the ferry at Kennacraig and make our way to the Isle of Islay.
Day 8 - Visiting 8 distilleries on Islay (Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig to name just a few) can keep you busy for the day. The island is also the home of the Kildalton Cross which is the only 8th century cross still standing in all of Scotland. As we head north, we will pass Finlaggan, the former site of the Clan Donald, the powerful lords of the Isles. The Woolen Mill in Bridgend designed the tartan used in the film Braveheart and also carries a large selection of souvenirs
Day 9 - We take a short 7-minute ferry ride to visit the remote Isle of Jura which has more red deer than people. There is only one road on the island and, of course, the Jura distillery. The island is pristine, unspoiled and perfect for some peace and quiet. We will return to Islay late in the afternoon just in time for our last pint at the pub.
Day 10 - We depart from Port Askaig and head back to the mainland, driving north along the rugged west coast to the port of Oban, the gateway to the Hebrides. Oban has fine shopping, great seafood and the Oban distillery, which is right on the main street overlooking the harbour. We will take a 45-minute ferry ride over to the Isle of Mull and proceed down to the tiny sea-side village of Fionnphort, where we will stay for the next 2 nights. From here, we will cross over to the island of Iona. The island has beautiful white sandy beaches and is a great place to walk or tour the famous Iona Abbey.
Day 11 - First, we drive north to the picturesque town of Tobermory. Then we leave the isle of Mull, heading back through Oban for our final stretch. We will make our way down to Loch Lomond, one of the most photographed lochs in Scotland and stop in the loch-side village of Luss, where you will be able to see another great view of the loch, as well as the quaint village itself. Our tour ends at your Airport Hotel where you will get a good night's rest and prepare for your early morning flight.
Day 12 - You will depart from Glasgow Airport and return home.
